Why your website isn't bringing you work.

Honest answers for UK salon, clinic, barbershop, landscaping and trade owners — on websites, getting found on Google, and what actually turns a visitor into a booked job. No jargon, and no pretending a new website fixes everything.

Part one

Your website.

Why is my website not getting me any enquiries?

In local service businesses it is almost always one of four things.

  • It is too slow on mobile. Visitors leave before it appears.
  • It shows stock photography instead of your own finished work. It proves nothing.
  • There is no single obvious next step. People read, then drift away.
  • Enquiries arrive, but nobody replies fast enough.

A redesign fixes the first three. The fourth is a follow-up problem, not a design problem — and it is worth knowing which one you actually have before spending money.

How do I know if my website needs redesigning?

Open it on your phone on mobile data, not office wifi, and time it. If it takes more than about three seconds to become useful, that alone is costing you enquiries.

Then check three things: is there a real photograph of your own work in the first screen, is there one obvious way to contact you without scrolling, and does the site say which towns you cover. If any answer is no, the site is underperforming regardless of how good it looks.

Do I need a website if I get all my work from Facebook and word of mouth?

Word of mouth still ends in a search. Someone recommends you, the customer looks you up, and what they find decides whether they call. A website is not there to replace referrals — it is there to convert them.

For a considered, visual purchase like a garden, a bathroom or a course of treatments, the customer is quietly comparing you against two or three others before they ever make contact.

Should I use stock photos on my website?

No. In a visual trade the work is the proof, and a stock photo destroys the one job the website exists to do. Customers recognise stock imagery instantly and read it as a sign you have nothing of your own to show.

A slightly imperfect photograph of a real job you finished outperforms a flawless stock image every time, because it is evidence rather than decoration.

Why does website speed matter for a local business?

Most local searches happen on a phone, often on mobile data rather than wifi. Every additional second of load time increases the share of visitors who give up before seeing anything at all.

Speed is also a ranking factor. Google measures real-world loading, responsiveness and layout stability, and a slow site is held back in results even when its content is good.

Should I show prices on my website?

Show something, even if it is a starting point or a typical range rather than a fixed price. A page with no pricing at all forces the visitor to make contact with no idea whether you are in their budget, and most will simply not bother.

How you frame it matters too. For recurring work, a clear monthly figure is far easier for a customer to accept than an hourly rate — an hourly rate sounds open-ended to somebody who cannot judge how long the job takes.

Are cheap monthly website deals worth it?

Be careful about what you own. Many low monthly offers are rentals: stop paying and the site disappears, and you often cannot take the design, the domain or the content with you. Over three or four years the total frequently exceeds what a site you owned outright would have cost.

Before signing anything, ask two questions. Do I own the site and the domain if I leave? And can I get an export of it? If the answer to either is no, you are renting.

See how we approach this on website design.

Part two

Getting found on Google.

How do I get my business to show up on Google?

For a local service business there are three separate places to win, and they work differently.

  • The map pack — driven mainly by a verified Google Business Profile, your proximity to the searcher, and your reviews.
  • The ordinary blue links — driven by your website's pages, the words on them, and who links to you.
  • AI answers — driven by clear, factual, well-structured content a language model can quote.

A Google Business Profile is free, and for most local businesses it produces more enquiries than anything else you could do.

What is a Google Business Profile and why does it matter?

It is the free listing that puts your business in Google Maps and in the block of local results above the normal links. It carries your opening hours, service area, photos and reviews.

For any search that includes a place name or the words "near me", it is usually the single biggest source of enquiries a local business has — and it costs nothing but the time to verify it.

What is the difference between SEO and AEO?

SEO — search engine optimisation — is about ranking in a list of links a person then clicks. AEO — answer engine optimisation — is about being the source a system quotes when it answers in prose, whether that is a Google AI overview, ChatGPT, Perplexity or Copilot.

The technical groundwork overlaps heavily, but AEO rewards different things: plainly stated facts, self-contained answers, structured data that names your business and service area, and content that reads as a direct answer rather than a sales page.

Will AI assistants like ChatGPT recommend my business?

They can, but only if they can find and understand you. That means your site must be crawlable rather than blocked, your business facts must be stated in plain text rather than trapped inside images or video, and the same name, service area and contact details must appear consistently across your website, your Google Business Profile and any directory listings.

Inconsistency is the most common reason a business gets passed over.

Why is my competitor outranking me?

Usually one of three reasons. They have more pages that specifically match what people search for — a page per service and per town, rather than one page trying to cover everything. They have more reviews and a more complete Google Business Profile. Or they have been publishing consistently for longer, so more sites link to them.

Ranking rarely turns on one clever trick. It turns on accumulated relevance.

How long does SEO take to work?

On an established site with existing authority, on-page fixes can move things within weeks. On a brand new domain with no history, expect three to nine months before search becomes a dependable source of enquiries — longer in competitive city markets.

A verified Google Business Profile is the exception and can start producing enquiries far sooner. Anyone promising fast rankings on a new domain is selling you something.

Should a small local business pay for SEO?

Only once the foundations are in place, and only with realistic expectations. Very cheap monthly SEO retainers usually buy automated directory submissions and a monthly report, not rankings.

Before paying anyone: claim and complete your Google Business Profile, get your site loading quickly on mobile, and make sure each service you sell has its own page. Those cost little or nothing, and they account for most of the achievable gain for a local business.

Part three

Enquiries & follow-up.

What is an AI receptionist and how does it help a local business?

An AI receptionist answers enquiries from your website, phone and social channels around the clock. It replies immediately, asks the qualifying questions you would ask, books the job into your calendar and chases anyone who goes quiet.

For an owner who is on a job, up a ladder or with a client, it stops missed calls turning into missed work — usually the largest and least visible leak in a local business. More on AI systems.

How quickly should I reply to a new enquiry?

As close to immediately as you can manage. Someone enquiring about a considered job is rarely contacting only you, and in practice the first business to respond with a helpful answer wins a disproportionate share of the work.

This is why an automated first response matters more than most owners expect. It is not about replacing the conversation — it is about holding the customer's attention until you can have it.
